Academic freedom: the case for legal protection - AUT EIS joint statement

21 February 2005

A historic joint statement between AUTS and EIS on the Further and Higher Education (Scotland) Bill was issued today at a press conference in the STUC.

The statement makes the case for  the amendment on academic freedom to be included in the bill. This will be discussed by the Enterprise and Culture Committee on Tuesday 22 February.

AUT Scotland and EIS believe that the legislative protection of academic freedom should be extended to cover all higher education institutions and further education colleges in Scotland and believe it is an anomaly that it presently only applies to pre-1992 universities.

The statement in full is available to download below.
