UCU Scotland campaigning & political work

8 April 2003

Much of the campaign work UCU Scotland undertakes is aimed at the Scottish Parliament and political parties.

This work is underpinned by discussions with officials in the Scottish Government, Universities Scotland, the Scottish Funding Council, and other bodies.

Pay

Scottish higher education institutions are included in the UK national pay and negotiating structures. However, funding and policy for higher education is decided by the Scottish Parliament and UCU Scotland works with MSPs of all parties to influence the budget outcomes.

Redundancy

Though for some years funding has been fairly stable, some universities have looked to make cuts to jobs to make savings and increase surpluses. UCU Scotland is fighting redundancies and continues to argue for fair funding for higher education in Scotland for the future.

Job security

UCU Scotland has been leading on stamping out zero-hours and casual contracts in higher education in Scotland. From giving evidence to the Scottish Affairs Committee leading to them issuing a report on the use of casual contracts in the sector to campaigning on campuses across Scotland UCU has been at the forefront of the campaign. We've seen real progress in some universities but there is much more to be done.
