Strike avoided at University of Surrey as dispute over job losses is settled

19 May 2015

The threat of strike action in a row over job losses at the University of Surrey has been lifted after successful negotiations between UCU and the university.

As a result of constructive talks between the two parties, the threat of compulsory redundancies has been removed. At one point up to 75 jobs were under threat across a variety of departments which prompted UCU members to vote in favour of strike action.

However, by extending a voluntary redundancy scheme and securing some formerly at risk posts, the union today declared the dispute, which had received support from local students, was over.

UCU regional official, Michael Moran, said: 'Strike action is always a last resort and we are delighted that we have managed to reach a settlement without the need for any disruption. We would particularly like to thank all the students that supported us during this dispute. We shall be monitoring the workloads of the staff that have remained in post because the university simply cannot expect more for less.'
