University of Warwick scraps controversial plans to use TeachHigher for admin services

2 June 2015

The University of Warwick has abandoned controversial plans to use a scheme called TeachHigher to employ hourly paid teaching and research staff.

UCU welcomed the news after it had campaigned against the plans, fearing they would leave casual teaching staff with inferior terms and conditions and some without any guaranteed hours.

In a message on the university's intranet, the institution acknowledged the opposition to its plans and stated that the 'ongoing scrutiny of TeachHigher has become a distraction and Teach Higher should be disbanded'.

Last month UCU wrote to the university describing the move as 'regressive' and calling for the plans are put on hold so that negotiations could take place. The union said it was keen to work with Warwick to deliver fair pay for all staff at the university.

UCU's national head of bargaining and negotiations, Michael MacNeil, said: 'We are very pleased Warwick has listened to our objections. We believe it would have been a regressive move out of step with the progress we have made with other universities to improve the treatment of casually employed staff.

'We hope to now sit down with Warwick and start proper discussions about how best to deliver fair pay for all staff at the university.'
