UCU Congress 2012

UCU Congress - 8-10 June 2012

UCU's Annual Congress 2012 will be held at Manchester Central Convention Centre from Friday 8 June - Sunday 10 June 2012.

This will include meetings of the Higher Education and Further Education Sector Conferences. Sector conference meetings will take place on Friday 8 June.

MOTIONS, AMENDMENTS AND LATE MOTIONS

Motions submitted for Congress and sector conferences have now been published in the Congress Business Committee's report, available here  (UCU420.html | UCU420.rtf).  The appendix to the report, UCU420A, including the text of composited motions can be found be below.

All amendments to Congress and sector motions have to be submitted by the deadline of 12 NOON on FRIDAY 18 MAY 2012.

Receipt of all amendments will be acknowledged. If you do not receive acknowledgement, please contact UCU before the deadline for receipt of amendments - by telephone to Catherine Wilkinson or Kay Metcalfe (020 7756 2500) or by email to cwilkinson@ucu.org.uk or kmetcalfe@ucu.org.uk. UCU cannot accept responsibility for failure of electronic communication. Branches are advised not to leave the submission of motions to the last minute.

Late motions submitted by the amendment deadling of 12 noon on Friday 18 May will be considered by the Congress Business Committee at their second meeting.

ACCOMMODATION

All accommodation will be booked by UCU for delegates on bed & bed breakfast basis. Delegates will be asked to indicate their requirements for accommodation when they register to attend Congress, and no further action is required from delegates or branches to book accommodation.

Delegates' hotels will be confirmed by letter no more than two weeks ahead of Congress. However, an e-mail to confirm accommodation requests will be sent out soon after registration. If you have not received confirmation a few weeks after your registration please contact Sue Bajwa.


EXPENSES

Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be paid to cover costs necessarily incurred in attending Congress, including delegates' travel from work or home addresses within the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. These expenses will be met centrally by UCU. Receipts must be submitted in respect of all expenses claimed, whether travel or subsistence. An expenses claim form specific to Congress will be made available to delegates. Hotel accommodation for delegates will be paid for directly by UCU on a bed and breakfast basis; other necessary subsistence costs (such as evening meals) will be reimbursed to delegates in accordance with the expense claim form.


CHILDCARE FACILITIES

A children's/kid's club will be provided during the hours of Congress Business and official fringe meetings, and there will be no charge for this facility. Please indicate on the registration form if you require this service, and the relevant forms will be sent out to you. Please make sure that we are notified of your requirements by the deadline of 27 April 2012.

Alternatively, members may claim a dependants' allowance to cover additional care expenses incurred directly in relation to attendance at Congress. Details of the scheme are available upon request from the Sue Bajwa


FRINGE & SOCIAL EVENTS

A welcome reception will take place on the evening of Thursday 7 June from 19:00 at the Manchester Central Convention Centre. Delegates must register for this reception in advance.

A Congress dinner will take place on Saturday 9 June at the Hilton Hotel and all delegates are welcome to attend, however, delegates must register for this dinner in advance, as explained on the Congress registration form. Delegates may bring their partners, but there will be a charge for this and partners must also be registered for the dinner in advance.

Fringe meetings will take place at lunchtimes and immediately after the close of Congress business, and a programme of official fringe meetings will be issued in due course.


CONGRESS BUSINESS COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS

There are two HE vacancies and two FE vacancies on the Congress Business Committee, each for a term of two years. Nominations should be submitted to reach UCU not later than 12 noon on Friday 1 June.  A nomination form can be found  (.doc) file type icon here (.doc) [41kb]

Nominations will be re-opened at the Congress meeting only if insufficient nominations are received by the 1 June deadline. If required, ballots will be held during the course of the Congress meeting.
