Students training to teach

7 March 2007

We offer free membership to students training to be lecturers and postgraduate students planning a career in post-school education.

Early careers

We positively encourage people planning to enter lecturing as a career to join our union. So, if you are a student training to teach in post-school education on a PGCE/Cert Ed in the post-compulsory education and training sector, you can join UCU free of charge for the duration of your course. Membership will continue to be free for up to a year after you finish your course, until you start work - and we even have advice for you about finding a job.

You can also join UCU as a student member if you are a postgraduate studying for a career in further or higher education, as long as you have declared an intention to pursue a career in post-school education and are not currently employed in providing teaching or research

UCU is active in a range of campaigns to promote further and higher education and the interests of our members - for the latest on these see our news and campaigns pages. We campaign for better student funding, and work closely with the National Union of Students (NUS).
