  • Developing your career
Most colleges and universities have staff development units offering courses and programmes to enhance your professional skills. There are professional staff development agencies for both FE and HE which can provide general advice and there are also national bodies supporting the professional development of lecturers in both further and higher education, for example the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Academic authorship is an important form of communication within and beyond the academic community. Being an academic author is about participating in this wider academic community.
  • Professional development in HE
UCU has been active in pressing for access to development opportunities for all staff, including academic-related staff and hourly-paid part-timers.
  • Initial training and professional development in FE
It is no longer a requirement to hold an FE teaching qualification to teach in the learning and skills sector after compulsory registration with the Institute for Learning, and its oversight of teaching qualifications, was dropped by government in 2013.
