UCU welcomes release of trapped Gaza student

5 December 2007

UCU today welcomed the release of Bradford University student Khaled al-Mudallal from Gaza. The Palestinian Business and Management student had been detained since July and unable to resume his degree, despite having a British residence permit valid until November 2010.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The right to education is a human right as stated in the UN universal declaration of human rights. We are of course delighted that Khaled has finally been allowed to resume his studies in Bradford, but one celebrated case does not hide the fact that there are hundreds of other Palestinian students unable to leave Gaza.

'We have written to the Foreign Office, and will do so again, to ensure the government does everything in its power to remove the restrictions that are preventing students from leaving Gaza to continue their studies.'

Israeli human rights organisation, Gisha, estimates that 670 students who have visas and places to study outside Gaza have been prevented from leaving.
