Stamp Out in HE

Information and materials on the Stamp Out campaign specific to HE.

Background information

The figures in the tables below have been compiled from HESA (the Higher Education Statistical Agency) and are the latest figures available for HE academic staff on fixed-term and open-ended contracts. They show wide variations in how staff are employed in different institutions. Have a look for your institution's figures and compare them with others - they can be very useful for campaigning, for example by showing how comparable institutions have reduced the use of fixed-term contracts.

See the links below for more materials.

  • Hourly-paid staff and the framework agreement
In 2004 a historic agreement was reached between the national employers and trade unions for a framework of new pay structures across higher education.
  • Postgraduate employment
Thousands of postgraduates are employed in higher education, usually in teaching roles. It is important that they are treated in the same way as other employees and are fully supported as members of staff.
  • Research staff
Researchers in higher education form a large and distinct group of UCU members whose contracts of employment are often characterised by insecurity.
  • HE branch campaign resources
The aim of the resources on this part of campaign pages is to provide HE branches with resources to start campaigning against casualisation in their own workplace.
