Bad management to blame for proposed job losses at University of Gloucestershire, says union

9 October 2009

UCU today blamed poor management for the decision by the University of Gloucestershire to close campuses in Cheltenham and London and to cut jobs at its Francis Close Hall site.

The union warned that the closure of the Pittville and London campuses could lead to the withdrawal of key services from the local communities. The Pittville campus in Cheltenham - currently home to the university's Faculty of Media, Art and Communications - will now shut by the end of 2011 and the university has said that it will sell its London campus.

University of Gloucestershire UCU branch chair, Gwen Chaney, said: 'UCU will be studying the details of the plans to cut staff at Francis Close Hall and close the Cheltenham and London campuses very carefully. We are in regular consultation with university management and remain firmly opposed to any threat of compulsory redundancies.

'Hard-working staff should not be made to pay for bad decisions on behalf of management. It is essential that everything is done to minimise the impact of any job losses and to ensure that current and future students are not affected. Wholesale cuts to the workforce are not in the interests of the university, students or the local community.'
