UCU launches new HIV guidance

30 November 2009

UCU will mark World Aids Day tomorrow by launching a new guide for branches on how to support people living and working with HIV.

Returning to work after an HIV diagnosis can be a very stressful event and UCU hopes that the new guide entitled HIV in the workplace will help its members to support colleagues with the condition.

Over the last 15 years the advent of powerful HIV drugs means that people are living long, healthy and productive lives. After diagnosis, most HIV positive men and women in the UK continue to work.

UCU today called for more life-saving treatments to be made available to poorer countries where hundreds of thousands of sufferers die every year and said it would to continue raise awareness at both home and abroad.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UCU is very proud to being launching this guide. It is essential that people living with HIV are made to feel valued at work. I hope that this new guidance will help members to support colleagues and friends living with the condition. The majority of men and women with HIV return to work and are vital for employers and our economy.

'While the treatment of HIV in the UK has come on a great deal in the last 15 years, for many people in the developing world it remains a death sentence. World Aids Day is an important time to recognise the advances we have made in treating the disease but also to remember the millions who have died from the condition.'
