Student loans debacle a 'total fiasco' says UCU

8 December 2009

UCU today said that Britain could not afford another repeat of this year's student loans fiasco.

Responding to a damning report by Professor Sir Deian Hopkin into university loan delays the union said it was essential that lessons were learnt for the future.

The report found that only 5% of phone calls were answered at the peak of delays and cited 'conspicuous failures'. It also accused the government of being 'too distanced' from responding to problems with loans that had been widely reported since August.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This has been a total fiasco from start to finish. It beggars belief that only 5% of phone calls were answered at the peak of the delays. Moving to university is a stressful and expensive time and to attempt to do that without finances that had been promised is just not on.

'Furthermore, as we all feel the pinch in these tough economic times, many parents, who will already have done their best to support their kids, will struggle to provide desperately needed funds for their offspring. The UK simply cannot afford to have a repeat of these delays. Lessons must be learnt.'
