UCU said today that the government's Christmas message of funding cuts, higher fees, fewer university places, a pay freeze and attacks on staff pensions was a 'Christmas kick in the teeth' for higher education and warned our universities risked falling behind on the world stage.
UCU Scotland welcomes the government commitment that the state should have prime responsibility to fund Scottish universities. The union was responding to a government consultation looking at how best to fund Scottish higher education.
Responding to this evening's vote in the House of Lords, which approved government plans to raise tuition fees, UCU described the decision as huge blow to students and the higher education sector.
Staff at UK universities have overwhelmingly rejected proposed changes from their employers to their pension schemes. In a ballot of over 31,000 people conducted by UCU, 96% said they did not support the employers' proposals to change the USS scheme.
