Staff at University of Leeds call for strikes if no progress in talks

11 March 2010

Members of UCU at the University of Leeds have today announced that unless there is real progress towards reaching agreement in the next week they will be taking strike action on Thursday 18 March.

A packed emergency general meeting yesterday received a report on the slow progress so far in the negotiations on job security. Members unanimously passed a motion that called for the strike action if urgent progress was not made over the next week.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Industrial action is an absolute last resort, but we are really disappointed at the lack of progress in the talks. These job losses will impact massively on the quality of education Leeds can provide as well as on the lives of hundreds of staff and the local community. We continue to believe a negotiated solution is possible and would urge the university to return to the negotiating table for talks to resolve this issue over the next few days.'
