Retirement and UCU membership

Your UCU membership doesn't need to end if you retire.

Upon retirement you have the following options:

  1. If you continue to work part-time:
We recommend that you continue your full membership but at a reduced rate. All you need to do is let us know your new salary band*. In respect of legal support, it is essential that members pay the correct subscription in connection with employment or trade union duties and activities in order to be eligible to request legal advice.
  2. Apply for retired membership:
If you have fully retired, we encourage you to remain in UCU as a retired member. Retired members become members of the Regional Retired Members Branch unless they specifically indicate that they wish to remain in their present branch. You can transfer to retired membership using our Member eServices facility: UCU eServices. Please ensure you include your home email address.

The subscription rate for 1 September 2012 to 31 August 2013 for retired members is £2.58 per month (£2.55 excluding the political fund). Members who have not been in qualifying employment within the last year cannot stand for election to the National Executive Committee.

Regional Retired Members branches (RMBs) campaign on issues directly affecting retired members: UCU regional retired members' branches.
  3. Or, you can end your membership completely.

*UCU salary bands are currently:

  • £40,000 and above
