UCU response to Home Affairs Select Committee report on student immigration

17 March 2011

UCU today welcomed a report from the Home Affairs Select Committee that cautioned the government against introducing measures which could damage the UK's thriving educational export sector.

The committee said that it remained concerned that a number of the proposals to change student immigration could have serious unintended consequences.UCU has raised its concerns about how changes would make the UK a less popular place for foreign students to consider studying in and send a worrying message that the UK was 'closed for business'.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UK higher education is already suffering from enormous cuts, the last thing we need are knee-jerk populist policies that will deny our universities billions of pounds. International students are a vital part of the campus community, adding cultural knowledge and links that better equip our graduates to work in a globalised economy. The last thing we should be doing is sending a message to the rest of the world that the UK is closed for business.'
