More warnings from America on for-profit providers

10 May 2011

UCU today warned the government against encouraging the growth of for-profit providers, after it was revealed that Kaplan Higher Education, who runs courses at several English universities, is being sued in the US for falsifying attendance records and grade inflation.

Kaplan has previously stated its desire to take over a struggling UK institution and be given degree awarding powers.

UCU said ministers should learn the lessons from America, where the US Senate is currently investigating for-profit education providers, and introduce tougher safety and quality checks.

A report last week by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) branded the current regulation for private providers in the UK as 'not coherent'.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'There needs to be tougher regulation of for-profit companies in this country.  The for-profit model carries huge risks to students and taxpayers alike and ministers should be keeping a close an eye on events in the US.

'Instead of being for-profit cheerleaders, the likes of David Willetts should learn the lessons from America and introduce the necessary safeguards to maintain quality and standards in our higher education system.'
