UCU response to QS world rankings

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The reason many universities have indicated that they will charge the full £9,000 a year fee is because their funding is being slashed by a government that is axing the teaching budget for the arts and humanities. Many universities will need to charge around the maximum fee just to maintain their current funding level, as the burden of cost is shifted from state to student.
 
'A considerable number of institutions may be forced to look very closely at the financial viability of their arts and humanities courses and if they can continue to run them. This is the greatest danger to the arts and humanities in our country and if we do not support universities offering a wide range of subjects then very soon it will just be a handful of institutions that, literally, can afford to offer arts and humanities.'
