Government withdraws plans on staff and student governors

3 November 2011

UCU today welcomed the news that the government is to withdraw plans to remove the statutory obligation for staff and students to sit on college governance boards.

The government, which had planned to push the reforms through the House of Lords, announced it was dropping the proposals following pressure from UCU, UNISON and the Nation Union of Students.

UCU had warned ministers that withdrawing the mandatory commitment would have increased the risk of mismanagement and corruption in further education.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'I am pleased that ministers have listened to the concerns of staff and students. These changes would have increased the risk of mismanagement and corruption at colleges and made institutions less answerable to the public.

'Staff and students play a vital role in ensuring transparency and accountability and in highlighting bad governance when it arises. A voluntary code, as has been shown in numerous other industries, is simply not good enough.'
