Stop university admissions 'heartache'

16 August 2012

As thousands of university applicants enter clearing, UCU today said the government's failure to fund sufficient university places would leave thousands facing admissions 'heartache'.

Over 120,000 applicants are expected to miss out on a place this year and the union said unless ministers increased capacity many would be left without a plan B at a time of high unemployment.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'On the day we should be celebrating the achievements of our young people the government's failure to fund sufficient university places means thousands will be left disappointed.

'By restricting numbers and making access to university more expensive the government is effectively closing the door on a generation of young people who have been told all their lives to aspire to university.

'This administration's reductionist view of higher education will ensure that thousands are left without a plan B with fewer job and training opportunities out there. Ministers have it within their power to invest in young people and end this admissions heartache but seem happy to preside over a system of winners and losers.'
