UCU Annual Seminar for Teacher Educators

The seminar will provide an opportunity for members in HE teacher education to talk to the union about issues affecting them and for the union to gather ideas on how best to support their views.

Objectives

The event will:

• provide an opportunity for HE teacher education members to talk to the union
• provide an opportunity for the union to gather views and ideas from HE teacher education members on how best to promote their interests
• provide a forum for the union to develop new education policy on HE teacher education
• reinforce and build the HE teacher education network.

Synopsis

Registration for the seminar will begin at 13.30 and the seminar will run 14.00 - 17.00.

James Noble-Rogers, Executive Director of UCET will give an overview of the policy context of ITT and developments over the last 12 months

Professor Olwen McNamara, Head of the School of Education at the University of Manchester, will speak on the evidence based practitioner and education research.  

There will be time for questions and discussion and a workshop session will round off the day.

Speakers

James Noble-Rogers

James Noble Rogers took on the role of Executive Director to UCET in January 2005. James has a wealth of experience in the field of Education, having worked both at the DfES and the TDA in policy-oriented posts. He joined UCET after a number of years with the Royal National Institute of the Blind where he was involved in the 'most radical re-positioning of the RNIB for 20 years' according to Radio 4. James has an MA in Philosophy from the University of Nottingham and a BA Hons in the Humanities from Hatfield Polytechnic. Recently he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Voluntary Sector Management (with distinction) from City University.

Professor Olwen McNamara

Professor Olwen McNamara is Head of the School of Education at the University of Manchester. Prior to taking on her current role she was Director of Initial Teacher Education, Executive Director of Teach First Northwest and Director of Post Graduate Research Programmes and she spent 20 years as a mathematics teacher before making the transition into higher education.  Her research interests are in the areas of teacher education, teachers' professional learning and careers and mathematics education. She has served on a number of national committees including the British Educational Research Association Council, where she was chair of the conference committee for a number of years, and the Universities' Council for the Education of Teachers, where she is Chair of the Research Committee.
