Young people need better careers advice, say MPs

23 January 2013

Young people need access to better careers guidance says a report from the Education Committee of MPs released today. The report also argues that careers guidance should not be the sole responsibility of schools and it must be adequately funded.

Responding to the report, UCU broadly welcomed its findings, but said the government had already axed one scheme offering careers advice to young people - Connexions.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Today's report is a timely reminder of the difficulties our young people face. Grants to stay on in college have been axed, university fees have rocketed and the careers guidance service, Connexions, abolished.

'Only through investing in proper careers guidance and educational opportunities for young people will the government be able to alleviate the long-term problem of youth joblessness.'
