Beyond the consumerist agenda: Teaching quality and the 'student experience' in higher education

27 February 2014

A positive UCU alternative to the consumerist agenda in higher education.

This policy paper argues that the best way to ensure high quality teaching and learning in higher education is through good, committed professional practice in an adequately funded system. Instead of customer satisfaction surveys such as the National Student Survey (NSS) it calls for a policy of 'student engagement' based on students as partners in the learning process, including revised student feedback mechanisms and proper collective representation.

The paper also puts forward a series of proposals to boost the status and recognition of teaching in higher education. Some of the core recommendations include improved professional development, revised promotion procedures and smaller class sizes.
