Protest in Lewisham against college cuts

15 April 2015

Staff at Lewisham Southwark College will be protesting outside the college's Lewisham Way building this afternoon from 5pm. Members of UCU are angry at plans to cut staffing costs by as much as 25%, which it says could result in the loss of 150 jobs.

The union says it is disappointed at the college's refusal to communicate with the unions exactly what its plans are and is calling on the college's management to listen to the union's proposals to mitigate the impact of any cuts.

The union said the college had to avoid any knee-jerk reactions to financial problems that could seriously damage the college's ability to deliver quality education for local people.

UCU regional official, Una O'Brien said: 'We really need the college to start listening to its staff before any serious decisions about the future are made. Any knee-jerk reactions to financial problems risk damaging the reputation of the college, as well as the quality and scope of education for people in the area.

'We want college governors to meet with us and look at alternatives ways out of this crisis than simply sacking key staff. Our local communities desperately need the second chance opportunities that the college can provide.'
