London colleges on strike in row over job losses

23 June 2015

Members of UCU at seven London colleges are on strike today in rows over job losses.

Staff will walk out at the following colleges and be on picket lines from 8am.

  • College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London
  • South Thames College (Wandsworth site)
  • College of North West London
  • Croydon College
  • Greenwich Community College
  • Hackney Community College
  • Lewisham Southwark College

The union said that although a number of colleges in the capital had resolved their disputes with the union by agreeing to rule out compulsory redundancies, staff at the remaining seven colleges would continue to fight job cuts.

UCU members were balloted for industrial action earlier this month and there was strong support for strike action at each college.

Staff at Lewisham Southwark College are out on strike for the fourth time this month in a separate row over the possible loss over more than 100 jobs. More details on that dispute are available here.

UCU regional official, Una O'Brien, said: 'Many colleges in London have resolved local disputes with UCU by agreeing to rule out compulsory redundancies. We call on the remaining colleges to do the same in order to avoid any further disruption.'
