UCU Scotland disconcerted over English student number cap

2 June 2020

Commenting on the news that UK government student number controls will apply to English students applying to Scottish universities, Mary Senior Scotland official UCU, said: "Education is a devolved issue, and it is disconcerting to see the UK government directing Scottish universities on the proportion of English students they are able to take.

'We've been consistently pushing the UK government to join the Scottish government in providing additional financial support to universities in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the international travel restrictions and the loss of international student tuition fee income that universities are predicting. The UK government's foray into student caps in Scotland underlines more clearly that they also need to be offering funding support to the sector at this time too.'

'With unemployment on the rise, and the predicted economic depression, it's vital that government supports the university sector to provide additional learning places as well as the research and skills to power the recovery.'
