Representing individual members: an introduction to casework, 25, August & 1,8,15, September 2021, Online, Scotland

This is a course for reps who are new to representing individual members or those who are considering becoming more involved in the direct representation of individual, and groups of members. Those who have been practicing for some time may also find this course to be a useful refresher of best practice.

Course meeting dates: 25th August & 1st, 8th, 15th September, 2021
Duration: 4 weeks

Total hours: 20-25 hours including all course meetings. Please expect some activity group meeting outside 
Location: Online

Delivery method:Online & course meetings via zoom or teams

Course meeting times: Course meetings will be 2 hours long and take place between 10:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. unless directed otherwise by the course tutor. The course meetings will take place on the dates above.

This is a course for reps who are new to representing individual members or those who are considering becoming more involved in the direct representation of individual members. This course is designed as an introduction only. More experienced reps may find this course useful in order to update their skills and look at current best practice. Please be aware that there is an expectation you attend the course in its entirety.

Please ensure you can attend the entire course prior to submitting your application form. Please further ensure you have secured time off from your employer to attend.

We recommend that you take your facility time on the same day as your course meeting. This will allow you to complete the course activities, and to contact the tutor/attend the course de-brief where offered.

Some colleges may also offer a p.m. debrief between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. this is not mandatory however, we would recommend you take the tutor up on the offer where available.

Online courses are no different to face to face courses in terms of time off for training. Time of for training is a right and one which should be exercised as part of normal industrial relations. For more info please see

UCU courses are funded via members' contributions and public funding. When you apply for a course we will assume that are making a commitment to attend the course as advertised, and have secured time off from your employer. Please contact you branch/region if you are having problems securing time off.

In this course you will look at the following areas

  • UCU legal support scheme 
  • The role of the rep
  • Effective communication with members seeking advice and representation
  • Sources of support and information for members seeking representation
  • The importance of using individual cases for collective organisation and describe the circumstances and ways in which this can be done
  • How to develop a collaborative approach with the member and manage their expectations
  • Confidentiality and conflicts of interest
  • Your own rights and take care of your own well being when handling personal cases
  • How your institution/employers policies and procedures relate to individual representation
  • Systems for dealing with individual casework in your branch
  • Online communication with members and issues the pandemic has raised

Please note. Time off along with permission from your employer to attend applies to online courses in the same way as any face to face course.

When completing the application form please ignore the references to lunch and overnight accommodation.

You may be asked to register with the delivering college in which your trade union tutor is employed. Some colleges may ask for your passport or equivalent identification details to register. UCU are working to limit these asks, but as it stands, if you do not register with the college you will be unable to join the course.

Your email address will be sent to the TUC on whose learning platform the course is situated. They will send you the course link where you will find your introductory activities and initially meet your course tutor.
