Precarious work in further education

UCU has today published a new report on precarious work in FE colleges. You can read the report here. The report was covered in the TES today

HE members: make your voice heard - vote on pay today

ERS envelope You will be aware that the union is currently balloting higher education members on the 2016 pay offer and you should receive your ballot paper in the post (see image of the envelope) by Wednesday 20 April at the latest.

Please:

  • check the post for your ballot envelope
  • read and share the 'Why should I vote' article
  • complete and return your ballot paper as soon as you can in the free envelope provided.

It's crucial that every member votes in this ballot so we are able to demonstrate the strength of feeling among staff. The ballot closes on 4 May. Please don't leave it to others to speak for you - cast your vote now.

People's Assembly march tomorrow - join the education bloc
UCU members will join the anti-austerity march for health, homes, jobs and education  in London on Saturday 16 April. Join the education bloc from 12:30pm on Gower Street, WC1E.

University of Reading vote of no confidence
Staff at the University of Reading have delivered a damning vote of no confidence in vice-chancellor Sir David Bell.  The university has been pushing through cuts to academic-related staff, while wasting millions of pounds on management consultants advising them on 'how to make savings.' Undergraduate teaching quality survey - have your say
If you teach on an undergraduate higher education course at any UK higher education institution, FE college or private provider please add your voice to the debate about teaching quality by filling in this short survey which you can find here.

UCU congress 2016
UCU branches that have not yet done so are urged to register their delegates for attendance at UCU congress 2016. Full details including how to register and entitlements can be found here.  Any questions email Sue Bajwa.

Tell Pearson campaign

UCU is part of a global coalition of trade unions  and NGOs calling for Pearson, the largest global 'edu-business', to rethink its current strategy of high-stakes testing and support for fee-paying, for-profit schools in Africa and Asia. Please add your voice to this campaign by signing this online petition.

Registration deadline: don't lose your vote in 5 May elections

This Monday 18 April is the deadline for registration to vote in the 5 May local elections taking place across UK. Make sure you are registered by clicking here, circulate the link to colleagues and students (just 43% of eligible 18-24 year olds voted in the last general election) and see our voter registration campaign pack here.

World Voice Day, 16 April
For people who teach there is perhaps no greater asset than your voice - but years of strain can take their toll, causing serious damage to your vocal cords. 16 April is World Voice Day;  to mark the occasion, voice care expert Phyllida Furse has written a guide to keeping your voice in good shape and on 28 April she'll be running a free voice care course in Belfast exclusively for UCU members.

Manchester May Day festival Saturday 30 April
UCU is again pleased to sponsor the annual Manchester May Day festival and you are invited to attend and circulate this flyer.

Tackling climate change conference, Friday 13 May
UCU/NUS conference on 'The role of education institutions in tackling climate change'. This free event will be held at the University of Manchester from 11:00am-3:30pm. UCU members will be reimbursed travel expenses. This will be an opportunity to evaluate what needs to be done in the education sector to meet our local, national and international commitments on climate change. Please register here.
