UCU welcomes investment in science and innovation

5 October 2007

UCU has welcomed government plans to invest in science and technology and the teaching of STEM subjects, outlined in the government's response to a review of science and innovation published today by Lord Sainsbury.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'Lecturers and researchers will welcome this increased focus on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - so called "STEM" subjects. These are vital subjects in which the UK already has great expertise. It will be important for colleges as well as schools to have the resources to implement this initiative and for universities to be equipped to develop the skills and knowledge of a new generation of STEM students.

'While investment in knowledge transfer to UK businesses is also welcomed, the government must also ensure that basic research is adequately supported if the UK is to maintain its international position.'
