Learning reps 2: Organising and bargaining to learn

To be eligible to attend this course you must be a UCU Learning Rep and have previously attended either Learning Reps 1: Induction, or the 3-module UCU ULR course.

Without the support of UCU reps and members you will not be able to effectively carry out your work and you will feel isolated in your role. In this first day of the course we will consider how you can involve members in learning, skills and professional development issues.

We will also look at the barriers some members may face in obtaining new educational opportunities, how you can identify their individual needs, and help them overcome any barriers. You will also have the opportunity to create a learning event action plan which you can use in your college/university.

At the end of this 1 day module you will have:

  • assessed your members learning needs and designed and developed an outline for a trade union learning event to take place in your branch
  • explored what learning, skills and professional development opportunities exist within your college/university
  • discussed equality issues around learning and how to deal with them
  • practiced the necessary skills needed to support individual members to access their rights to time off to learn
  • created an action plan for your first UCU learning event to take to your branch committee eg. a branch briefing, training course, online learning or skills based learning.
