UCU comments on graduate salary freeze

Commenting on the latest Association of Graduate Recruiters Survey, UCU warned that future graduates' salary expectations may need to be managed in light of findings that the average graduate salary has stagnated for three years.
The survey shows the average graduate employed by one of the 222 AGR employers taking part, earned £25,000 a year in 2008-9 and 2009-10, and is predicted to do so again in 2010-11. This salary stagnation is described in the report as 'unprecedented'.
In 2012-13, students will start to pay tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year to replace an 80% cut in state funding to university teaching budgets.
Commenting on the survey, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Huge increases in university fees means that students and their families will be investing tens of thousands of pounds in a degree course and will expect a decent return for that. This survey clearly shows that may not be the case in coming years.
'The government needs to be more realistic about the rather specious graduate premium it has bandied about to justify its appalling transfer of university funding from state to student through the tripling of tuition fees.'
