Liverpool Community College forced to pay back £80,000 in false students probe

UCU today called for an urgent meeting with the principal of Liverpool Community College after the college was ordered to pay back £80,000 to the government after a two-year enquiry by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) found the college had claimed funding for students who were not enrolled on courses the college claimed they were.
The lengthy investigation revealed that the college had claimed funding for students who were enrolled on the same course in successive years and that employers' references, needed to prove students on courses had work experience, had been falsified. The SFA has now referred its findings to the police.
UCU regional official, Lynn Collins, said: 'UCU will be seeking an urgent meeting with the principal to discuss the contents of the report. In particular, we want to ensure that the financial penalties incurred by the college do not impact on members' jobs or the education of students.
'With the publication of this report, UCU believes it's time for the college to move on and do what it does best - providing a quality education for Liverpool's diverse communities, with an exceptional staff team proud to serve the public.'
