City centre protest in Leeds City College jobs row

1 July 2014

Staff and students will be out in protest at Leeds City College tomorrow in a row over job losses and the planned closure of a nursery.

The protest will start at 12pm outside the college's Park Lane campus in the city centre. Members of the University and College Union, Unison and the GMB trade unions are in dispute with the college over plans to axe another 100 academic jobs, following similar losses in September 2013.

The college is also planning to close its nursery and adult education centres with the loss of 38 nursery workers' jobs and the end of education classes for adults in some of the more deprived areas of the city.

Protest at Leeds City College on 2 July 2014Staff and students protested at Leeds City College in a row over job losses and the planned closure of a nursery. UCU regional official, Julie Kelley, said: 'The only winners in Leeds since the colleges merged to form Leeds City College have been a handful of senior managers who have enjoyed bumper pay rises.

'Staff have seen their pay kept down and colleagues lose their jobs, while students have seen courses close. These latest plans threaten education in some of the city's most deprived areas as well as more jobs.

'Staff and students will be out in force demonstrating why the college needs to be doing more for the local community, especially in these difficult times.'
