Stockton Riverside College under fire for sacking staff over the holidays

College announce 119 job losses and pay cut plans as staff break up for the summer • College refuses union's demand to delay consultation until after staff return from break
Stockton Riverside College was under fire today as it was revealed the college plans to sack 119 lecturers and force them to reapply for their jobs with a pay cut of up to as much as £10,000 a year.
UCU said it was particularly unhappy with the cynical timing of the announcement, which was made as the college finished for the summer holidays. College bosses have refused the union's request that they put back the job loss consultation until after the holidays so all staff can fully take part.
The announcement came just the college improved its Ofsted rating and avoided heading into special measures. Staff were expecting some beneficial recognition of their work - not to lose their job or be forced to take a massive pay cut.
UCU regional official, Iain Owens, said: 'This is an unbelievably cynical move by the college. Staff have a right to be treated properly and fairly. However, the college has taken the coward's approach and hit staff with this devastating news just as they break up for the summer.
'Our members have worked incredibly hard to ensure the people of Stockton have good quality post-school education. Telling staff heading off on holiday that they may not have a job when they return, and if they do they will have a considerable pay cut, is unacceptable.'
