UCU members back ballot at strike breaking Lambeth College

Last week the college put forward amended contracts, but UCU members rejected them and backed a new ballot for industrial action. In June, UCU members went out on strike for five weeks - the longest strike in the union's history.

In the ballot, 92% of UCU members voted against the amended proposals from the college and to ballot for strike action. The union said it wanted the matter resolved through negotiation, despite the college's hardline approach and readiness to throw money at strike breakers.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UCU members have voted overwhelmingly against the proposals made by management, as is their democratic right. Any sensible employer would be working hard to try and resolve the issue and repair staff relations.

'The fact that Lambeth College wants to spend money on strike breakers in advance of a ballot on strike action speaks volumes about its priorities. The door remains open on our side for negotiations despite the college's hardline and shameful behaviour.'
