UCU welcomes consultation on higher education governance bill

The Scottish government today launching a consultation for a planned higher education governance bill next year.

Mary Senior, UCU Scotland Official, said: 'UCU has long campaigned for better governance of universities and for the Scottish Government to legislate on the proposals from the von Prondzynski review. 

'This consultation and the promise of legislation next year is welcome. We will ensure the voice of Scotland's lecturers and academic staff is heard loud and clear during the consultation period and that the outcome means that staff and students are fully involved in the running of Scotland's universities.'

The Scottish Government consultation on governance in higher education institutions runs until 30 January 2015. The consultation proposals include ensuring the makeup of governing bodies is fully representative, that there is a more transparent process for selecting chairs of university courts including elections, and that there is a wider and stronger definition of academic freedom.
