HEADLINES THIS WEEK

Higher education national pay negotiations: initial offer of 1.2%

Negotiations on higher education pay began this week and the five HE unions presented our joint claim which you can read here. The employers responded with an opening offer of 1.2% rise on pay and an initial response on all other elements. Negotiations will continue on Tuesday and you can get further information on our website here

More 'National Plus' success in further education 

UCU at Abingdon and Witney College are the latest branch to record a success in their negotiations on a 'National Plus' claim. You can read more on this and UCU's wider work to restore meaningful collective bargaining in FE here.

2. Reimagining further education conference, 21 June, Birmingham

Birmingham City University will host a one day conference in June which looks at the power of FE to empower teachers, learners and communities. UCU is sponsoring the event and you can find out full details and book tickets here

3. Getting the vote out: UCU and the Trade Union Act

The union has launched a campaign to increase turnout in ballots in response to the new Trade Union Act which requires a minimum 50% of members vote for industrial action to take place. Please read our new guide to 'getting the vote out', make sure you remember to vote in UCU ballots, and talk to your branch about how you can help increase participation in your workplace. 

4. Manchester Metropolitan University ballot for strike action

UCU has formally declared a dispute and given notice of the intention to ballot for strike action following the breakdown of talks as a result of the decision the close the MMU Cheshire campus with consequent 160 academic redundancies over the next 3 years including over 30 by August 2017. 5. UCU Oxford officer wins Guardian award

UCU Oxford equalities officer, Karma Nabulsi has won The Guardian's 'Inspiring Leader Award'. The awards celebrate teaching excellence in universities and were presented by Lauren Laverne in a ceremony on Wednesday night. Congratulations are due to Karma who dedicated her award to 'those who campaign daily on the important issues of equality, decolonising our curriculum, and protecting our universities' freedoms, which are increasingly under attack.'

6. University of Brighton UCU strike today

UCU members at University of Brighton walked out today in a dispute over job losses, plans to limit promotions and downgrade teaching staff. Staff will also begin working to contract and plan a further two days of strike action, 26-27 April if no resolution is reached. Please send messages of solidarity to M.Abel@brighton.ac.uk

10. March for Science, 22 April

The science community has come together to form the campaign group March for Science to promote and celebrate publicly funded science, progress and academic freedom.
