HEADLINES THIS WEEK

UCU comment on general election result

Commenting on yesterday's election results, the union has said the next government must prioritise investment in further and higher education and called on politicians to act swiftly to end uncertainty over the position of EU nationals who make up a substantial part of the workforce. Sally Hunt also applauded the increased turnout of younger people and the success of recent voter registration drives in university and college campuses

Further education: report on insecure work and privatisation 

A new UCU report indicates many FE colleges are setting up subsidiary companies to hire staff on inferior contracts. The union has published information on over 200 colleges and their employment practices that shows over a quarter of FE teachers are now on insecure precarious contracts.

2. University of Manchester: professors sign letter of no confidence over cuts

UCU is campaigning against proposals to axe over 170 academic and support jobs at University of Manchester and this week 200 professors at the institution joined the call to stop the cuts in a letter expressing no confidence in senior management. 3. Manchester Metropolitan University: support UCU strike to defend jobs

UCU members at Manchester Metropolitan University will take strike action on 20 and 21 June over job losses resulting from closure of the Crewe campus. Scheduled strike action was postponed due to the terror attack in Manchester. Please show your support by signing the petition here

4. Festival of Higher Education

Educationalists from across the higher education sector including UCU general secretary Sally Hunt will come together for the first Festival of Higher Education at University of Buckingham on 28 and 29 June to debate how the sector will be affected by recent political developments. 

5. Protest at Reading College over Activate Learning cuts

Staff at Reading College joined a UCU and Unison protest against redundancies and cuts this week following an announcement that Activate Learning will be cutting a possible 71 teaching and support staff. 

6. Save Philosophy at St Mary's University 

Please sign the petition to save the Philosophy programme at St Mary's University Twickenham which has been threatened with closure despite its successful single and joint honours degrees and running a popular public lecture series sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy. 

7. NHS SOS: demonstrate to save A&E at Chorley Hospital 

Campaigners including UCU and other union members have been holding weekly demonstrations against closure of the 24 hour accident and emergency at Chorley Hospital in Lancashire for over 60 weeks now. Please take a look at their Facebook group and go along to show your support. 

8. Know your rights: London event for fixed and part-time staff

Find out more about your rights at work and our campaign for better contracts in education. A morning workshop for London region members takes place on Wednesday 21 June at UCU headquarters, Carlow Street, NW1 7LH starting at 10:30am. Register by emailing nlee@ucu.org.uk
