UCU superannuation working group endorses JEP report on USS pension scheme

21 September 2018

The University and College Union (UCU) has today confirmed that its superannuation working group (SWG) has endorsed the recommendations of the Joint Expert Panel (JEP) on the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), and called upon Universities UK and USS to do similar.

The JEP was jointly set up by UCU and UUK following a ballot of UCU members in April as part of an agreement to suspend industrial action at 65 universities over proposed changes to benefits. Its first report was published last week.

The SWG, which includes the union's negotiating team, welcomed the JEP's first report as "a significant and impressive piece of work" and said its recommendations should form the basis for negotiations. The SWG has called upon branches to discuss the JEP's recommendations with members and their university managers before the union's national dispute committee meets in early October to consider next steps.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt said: 'The SWG's support for the JEP recommendations is a significant step forward in our ongoing campaign to protect members' pensions. It is critical that both USS and the employers engage in a similarly positive way. The SWG's decision will now be circulated to members and branches who will be asked to discuss and feedback their views, and those of their institutions, in advance of the meeting of the national dispute committee on 5 October.'
