UCU urges Foreign Secretary to demand Israeli authorities release Aberdeen Lecturer
20 April 2012
UCU has urged the Foreign Secretary to demand the release of an Aberdeen Lecturer who is been held by the authorities after flying into Israel this week.
The President of the UCU, Terry Hoad, has today (Friday) written to the Foreign Secretary, William Hague MP, seeking the UK Government's support in ensuring the release and safe return of the Aberdeen Lecturer, Dr Karolin Hijazi to the UK.
Dr Hijazi, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, flew to Tel Aviv on 14 April with the intention of visiting Bethlehem. Along with a number of other pro-Palestinian campaigners, Dr Hijazi was detained by the Israeli authorities. The University and College Union is deeply concerned about the actions of the Israeli authorities in preventing Dr Hijazi - who is originally from Palestine - from visiting Bethlehem, and about her welfare.
UCU President Terry Hoad said: 'UCU is urging the Foreign Secretary to demand that Israeli authorities release Dr Hijazi, and wants the UK Government to protest in the strongest terms at the Israeli authorities treatment of pro-Palestinian campaigners'.
