UCU response to announcement that Kirsty Williams MS, minister of education, will stand down at next year's Senedd election

27 October 2020 | last updated: 28 October 2020

Following the announcement by Kirsty Williams MS, minister for education, that she intends to stand down at next year's Senedd elections UCU policy officer Jamie Insole said: 'Kirsty Williams will rightly be remembered as one of Wales' more formidable education ministers.'

Her service to the post-16 sector was characterised both by a recognition of the value of social partnership and an appreciation of the raw power that sits in our institutions.

'As minister, Kirsty realised that world class post-16 education requires properly rewarded staff, and we thank her for her work to maintain pay-scales and her support for the introduction of a national contract. All in all, her legacy will be fondly felt across both sectors.'
