Higher education strike institutions, September 2023

6 September 2023

The elected representatives on UCU's higher education committee (HEC) called for strike action in September 2023 over the national pay and working conditions dispute.

Most strike action will take place over five consecutive days from Monday 25 September 2023 to Friday 29 September 2023, although a small number of UCU branches strike on different/additional days because of their specific local circumstances. Check the full list below. Please note that the list of institutions where strike action will take place has changed from that originally published. Strike action was called off at a number of universities and will now be targeted at the very worst employers.

Action short of a strike (ASOS) remains on and will involve the following:

  • working to contract
  • not covering for absent colleagues
  • removing uploaded materials related to, and/or not sharing materials related to, lectures or classes that will be or have been cancelled as a result of strike action
  • not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action
  • not undertaking any voluntary activities.

The marking and assessment boycott (MAB) that began on 20 April 2023 was withdrawn on 6 September 2023.

Important This is strike action called for the pay and working conditions dispute only; there is no strike action or action short of a strike (ASOS) called for the USS pensions dispute.
