UCU strike off at University of the West of Scotland as employer withdraws threat of compulsory redundancies
17 October 2025
Responding to news that management at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) were withdrawing* the threat of compulsory redundancies, Jamie Hopkin, UCU UWS branch president, said "This is a massive relief to workers at the University of the West of Scotland who were facing the loss of their livelihoods. It will also be a relief to students who would have experienced larger classes and a reduction in the contact time they could have individually with lecturers and support staff on campus. It is welcome that in the face the threatened twelve days of strike action from the UCU branch the employer has taken compulsory redundancies off the table."
note
*Management at the university told campus unions that compulsory redundancies were being taken off the table at a meeting during the afternoon of Friday 17 October 2025. UCU members had been set to take part in 12 days of strikes during October and November from Monday 20 October.
