UCU ends dispute with Institute of Education

11 June 2010

UCU announced today that it has ended its dispute with the Institute of Education (IoE) after the university withdrew its threat of compulsory redundancies.

At an emergency executive meeting this afternoon, UCU representatives at the IoE overwhelmingly backed recommendations from the union's negotiators to end the dispute and to call off planned industrial action.
The news comes in the same week that UCU suspended industrial action at King's College, and the union today re-iterated its message that it wants to resolve disputes around the negotiating table and not on the picket line.
UCU regional support official for the IoE, Andy Young, said: 'Today's outcome is testament to the hard work of all the branch representatives and the determination of our members to resist redundancies wherever they occur. Whilst UCU is pleased to announce that we are calling of strike action, members at the IoE will take part in a national day of protests against education cuts on Monday 21 June.'
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We are pleased at the progress that has been made at the IoE and King's over the last week. We hope that other universities are watching this with interest. With ballots taking place at Sussex and Glasgow University we reiterate our message that we want to resolve disputes around the negotiating table, which events at the IoE and Kings have shown is perfectly possible.'
