Report says social mobility will be 'unintended victim' of university funding changes

Social mobility is likely to be an unintended victim of the government's plans to increase university fees and the new methods of allocating resources and controlling student numbers look likely to reinforce relative disadvantage rather than remove it, warns a report released today.
Responding to analysis of the recent higher education white paper by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), UCU said government plans to allow universities to recruit as many students with AAB grades at A-level as they like would entrench the deep social divisions that already exist in the higher education sector.
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The expansion of places for AAB students will lead to an even higher number of students from privileged backgrounds at our most elite institutions. Efforts to improve the social make-up on campus will be wiped out by these plans, which make a mockery of government promises to improve social mobility.'
