Dundee and Strathclyde join £9,000 a year university club

27 September 2011

UCU Scotland has criticised the the announcement by Dundee and Strathclyde universities to charge £9,000 annual fees for students from the rest of the UK.

Although both universities have said they will charge £9,000 annual fees, students who undertake a four-year programme will have their fees capped at £27,000 to match the cost of a three-year degree in England.

The first minister said recently that he wanted 'a more moderate' approach from Scottish universities when setting their tuition fees.

UCU Scotland president, Gordon Watson, said: 'My university, Strathclyde, has few students from elsewhere in the UK and this announcement will do nothing to attract more. Universities need to think longer term when considering fee levels and their impact.'
