United for Education 19 November - Owen Jones to speak at rally 

Our United for Education event with the NUS takes place in just a fortnight on 19 November, 12 noon, Park Lane, London and we're pleased to announce that journalist and author Owen Jones has just been added to the list of speakers. Please see here for coach details and let your colleagues and students know about the event by downloading posters and flyers.  

Also the NUS have teamed up with Brixton Jamm - one of UK's leading music venues  - to throw a special warm up gig ahead of the demo

Further education - transforming lives and communities

We've launched a campaign to highlight the importance of further education (FE) and its power to change people's lives. Please help us show politicians and decision makers the human face of FE and ask them to give support to the colleges that our communities depend on by sharing the link to the website and circulating this short film.

2. Senior management survey - help audit university management 

Please complete this new online 'senior management survey' (SMS) which aims to show to what extent higher education institutions are supporting academic staff to do their jobs effectively and mirrors the national student survey (NSS).

3. New UCU-Amnesty campaign briefing 

UCU & Amnesty UK  have launched a new campaign briefing called Truth for Giulio Regeni. Giulio was a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, who was tortured and murdered while doing fieldwork in Egypt. As part of this staff-student campaign, UCU members are encouraged to sign a new petition organised by Amnesty Italy

4. Education committee - expressions of interest from academics

UCU's education committee sometimes commissions research into education policy areas.  The union is committed to working both with those who are leading in their fields and to supporting early career academics.  Current areas of research for the union include: further and higher education (FHE) funding, FE and life chances, casualisation, learner voice, Prevent, academic freedom, nature of professionalism in FHE, privatisation of FHE, widening access, and admissions reform. UCU members who wish to register an interest in working on future UCU research projects in these areas should contact the committee secretary Matt Waddup.

6. It's your UCU - get involved, 14 December, London

If you would like to do your bit to help the union or would like to get more involved but don't have a lot of time then we would like to warmly welcome you to an event at our London HQ on 14 December 2016. Many of you have already volunteered to act as a local contact for your workplace by clicking here. This event is an opportunity to find out more about the union, meet like-minded colleagues and learn about your rights at work and you can find out more and register here.  

7. Prison educators - we'd like to hear from you

  • Do you work in one of the six reform prisons?  If so we would welcome some feedback from you about the new regime and how it is working for educators and learners alike. 
  • We are gathering views on the adequacy of offender learning in the community.  In particular we would like to know about the join-up between FE colleges and the prison environment.
  • The Education and Training Foundation is looking for examples of effective practice in the use of ICT across the secure estate to showcase in a report, due to be published in early 2017 (please note we already have examples from HMP Wayland and HMP Thameside).
