Higher education pay offer - your views

Branch meetings to discuss the offer are currently being organised so please get in touch with your local UCU representative and make sure you have your say on the pay offer.

Other news this week

1. In the news

  • Academic pay lower than at the start of the decade
  • UK universities bank £1bn in donations
  • Job loss fears

Read all about it here.

2. Voter registration: help make education a key election issue

Figures published this week show a substantial surge in students registering to vote suggesting that their vote will play an important role in the forthcoming general election. UCU is running a voter registration drive alongside NUS and Bite the Ballot so please download our joint voter registration pack here to help encourage your colleagues and student to register and make sure education is a priority issue for candidates.

3. Academic boycott of London Metropolitan University - revised guidance

Last week the union was threatened with an injunction and damages by London Metropolitan University (LMU) with regard to the academic boycott publicised in last week's campaigns update and in an email to all members. In particular LMU alleges that UCU has encouraged staff to break their contracts. In response, UCU withdrew that boycott advice and has replaced with fresh advice. UCU is not asking or encouraging academics to act in breach of their contracts of employment. In the event of any doubt, before acting advice should be sought from the union or clarification sought from your line manager. Please see here for our revised guidance on how members not employed at LMU can support the academic boycott.

4. Manchester Metropolitan University UCU getting the vote out and defending jobs

MMU UCU are the first branch to ballot members under the new restrictive trade union legislation, and the union is working hard to support staff at Crewe facing redundancy this summer and to achieve a successful vote for action. Please continue to send messages of support to: J.Wilkinson@mmu.ac.uk
