General election: speak out for education

Please help make education a priority issue in the general election by making sure you are registered to vote before the deadline on Monday 22 May and encourage your colleagues and students to do the same.

We've produced an election manifesto and will be urging the new government to work with us to develop a learning society which works for everyone.

Many UCU branches are organising election hustings and UCU London region are supporting a 'Vote Education' day of action on Wednesday 24 May including the TES hustings event and a rally in Westminster (assemble 5:30pm in Old Palace Yard). 

USS pension developments

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt has written an article for the Times Higher about current developments in the USS pension fund about why employers should change attitudes towards risk and avoid further cuts to academic pensions.

2. Further education pay update

UCU and the other further education (FE) trade unions formally presented the FE England joint pay and conditions claim for 2017/18 to the Association of Colleges (AoC) this week but the employer representatives were unable to respond stating that further work would be done over the summer to respond to the claim in September. 3. Union protest to defend jobs at Lewisham Southwark College

Staff at Lewisham Southwark College staged a protest outside the Lewisham campus this week over plans to cut 85 jobs. UCU has called on management to halt the proposed cuts and to rule out compulsory redundancies and the union will now be balloting members for strike action. 

3. Further education conference: transforming lives  

There are still a few places on the one day 'Reimagining further education' conference taking place in Birmingham on 21 June 2017 and you can find details and registration information here.  

4. Manchester Metropolitan University strike to defend jobs 

UCU members at Manchester Metropolitan University will be taking strike action on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 May over closure of the Crewe campus and subsequent job cuts. Supporters in the area can join the strike rally at 11:00am, All Saints campus which will be addressed by Sally Hunt and you can still send a message of solidarity by signing the petition against compulsory redundancies here

5. Develop your career with UCU: classroom management CPD course

There a still a few places left on our Oxford classroom management course next Wednesday 24 May. Delivered by an experienced practitioner, this one day course will help you develop strategies for managing student behaviour in the classroom. 

6. Stamp out casual contracts: get involved and make a difference

Are you on an insecure contract and interested in getting involved in the union's campaign for more secure employment in education? Come along to our activist event on 24 June at UCU headquarters

7. We are international: University of Stirling UCU Brexit round table event

University of Stirling UCU are holding a round table discussion event about the impact of Brexit on university staff and students. Thursday  25 May, 12:30-2pm, Cottrell Room 2A13, Stirling, FK9 4LA. Find out more about UCU's campaign to defend the rights of EU nationals here

8. Save our employment statute: defend job security at University of Warwick

UCU are campaigning to defend job security and academic freedom at Warwick as management attempt to 'reform' the statutes governing employment at the university and you can sign the petition here

9. Women's march for abortion rights: Birmingham, 20 May

Campaigners in Birmingham will march to defend women's right to choose and say no to Trumpism on Saturday 20 May and you can find out more here. 

10. Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival - 14-16 July 2017

The annual trade union music festival takes place on 14-16 July in the village of Tolpuddle in Dorset. UCU is supporting the event and is one of the 'magnificent seven' unions sponsoring the Tolpuddle Radical Film Festival 2017
