Vote now to save your pension

The ballot to save the University Superannuation Scheme (USS) is now open and if you work in a university covered by USS you should receive your ballot paper in the post over the next few days. Please vote by completing the form and returning in the envelope provided.

Analysis by independent experts First Actuarial shows staff stand to lose as much as £200,000 of their retirement income under the latest hardline proposals for USS. The employers have yet to provide details of their own modelling which leaves us to believe that UUK's proposal to end guaranteed pension payments has been made without any consideration of the impact on staff.

University of Brighton UCU strike to defend jobs

Strike action at University of Brighton continues next week as staff walk out against the threat of compulsory redundancies. UCU members will be on strike on Monday and Tuesday and Sally Hunt will address a 'teach out' on Tuesday afternoon. See here for more information and photos of all the action.

Birmingham City University protest, Wednesday 6 December

In the face of mounting intransigence by the employer, UCU members will be lobbying the VC's building in a lunchtime protest over the loss of academic contracts in the Education Development Service. Please show your support by joining the protest on Wednesday at 1pm, outside University House.

Concordat for researchers

Read UCU's submission 'The impact of the Concordat upon my institution appears to be minimal, though I believe this says as much about the weaknesses of the document itself as it does about my employer's implementation.' This week, researchers have been responding to the review of the impact of the Concordat on Support for the Career Development of Researchers. UCU's own submission calls for a revision of the Concordat to address its weaknesses and you can read it here.
